For years West Africa has been on my bucket list, particularly Ghana for several reasons. For one, I was born and raised in Jamaica and we believe that our roots is from Ghana. Interestingly enough, I have often been told that I look Ghanaian due to my facial features. Ghana is known for its beautiful beaches, overall awesome vibe and great weather. However, I have to be honest that growing up, I did not always think that Africa had anything much to offer due to my ignorance and how the media portrayed the continent. It often times depicted the lowest of the lowest living conditions. So I grew up with a preconceived notion that Africa was simply poor. I am though grateful that as I got older, my curiosity about travel and my origin grew stronger and I became eager to educate myself about what Africa really had to offer.

I had to be a little extra and represent in my Ghana colors!

The view from my balcony.

Now, let's talk about "lil miss sassy" in the picture below. I smile every time I look back at this picture, even now as I write this blog. I met her while I decided to take a random stroll while waiting for Morgan (one of the girls I was on this trip with) to get her hair braided. The price of which I will share a in just a bit. It was rather mind blowing! Anyway, back to little miss cutie. She was very shy at first when I came along, but then she started to warm up to me a bit. In the picture, she had just stuck herself in the eye with the piece of stick in her hand while trying to pose which I found hilarious. I will be printing and hanging this picture on my refrigerator. If I am not sure about anything else, I am sure that seeing her cute little face will give me a little more happiness in my happy place.

If you are planning a trip to Ghana, and you love or are planning on wearing braids, instead of braiding your hair in the US, WAIT until you go to Ghana, it only costed Morgan $40USD!! Yes, you heard me correctly, forty US dollars! A taxi was provided to and from the salon, it included getting her hair washed and the braids were provided. Try comparing that to paying over $180 for the same hairdo PLUS having to buy the braids in the US. The ladies at the salon were super sweet and funny. We had a great time there and definitely recommend this salon. It can be found at 37 (that is the name of the district) in Accra at the military barracks.

Sis even got her edges slayed! lol

Now, you know I couldn't go to Ghana and not get THE African black soap and shae butter right?! I was hooked up with a good bit of shae butter and black soap to last me for a very long time for less than $15USD!! You read it correctly, less than fifteen dollars! I must say that they are true hustlers in Ghana. They know how to bargain and get you to stop at their station. I can always appreciate a hard worker. We became buddies soon after.

If you were ever hesitant of going to Africa, don't be, there is so much to see and do. I am nowhere near done yet, I am just starting. Go with the right people or even solo if you may, an open mind, take probiotics, malaria preventative measures, try not to drink the water, pack light and you will be just fine. #Happytravels
